What is Keraflot?

Keraflot is a calcium sulphate-based mineral casting compound designed for creating decorative interior objects. Unlike traditional ceramics or clay, it does not require kiln firing. Instead, it cures naturally after the powder is mixed with water.

Keraflot is valued for its ease of use, exceptionally white colour and smooth surface, making it ideal for creating candle holders, trays, small vases, figurines and many other decorative objects. Keraflot or Jesmonite – Which Material Should You Choose?

Although Keraflot and Jesmonite are often compared, they are not direct substitutes. Both are used for producing decorative objects, but they were developed for different applications and should not be compared solely on price, strength or ease of use.

Keraflot is a calcium sulphate-based mineral casting compound that is mixed only with water. It is ideal for decorative indoor objects such as candle holders, trays, small vases, figurines and other home décor items. Thanks to its simple working process, exceptionally white finish and excellent value for money, Keraflot is a great choice for both beginners and experienced makers looking for an economical material for everyday production.

Jesmonite, on the other hand, is a complete family of mineral composite systems designed for different applications. Some formulations are intended for interior décor, while others are developed for outdoor use or projects requiring greater durability. In addition to the casting materials themselves, Jesmonite offers a broad ecosystem of complementary products, making it a popular choice for professional production and projects that demand higher mechanical strength, improved moisture resistance or other specialised performance characteristics.

If your goal is to create decorative indoor objects using an easy-to-work-with, aesthetically pleasing and cost-effective material, Keraflot is likely the better choice. If your project requires greater durability, outdoor performance or more advanced material capabilities, Jesmonite may be the more suitable option.

Common Mistakes When Working with Keraflot

Even the highest-quality material cannot guarantee perfect results if it is used incorrectly. Most problems occur because of mistakes during the casting process.

The most common mistakes include:

  • using an incorrect water-to-powder ratio;
  • waiting too long before pouring the mixture into the mould;
  • using dirty or damp silicone moulds;
  • mixing too vigorously, introducing excessive air bubbles;
  • removing the cast too early or leaving it in the mould for too long;
  • painting or finishing the object before it has fully dried.

By following the manufacturer's recommendations, these issues can usually be avoided.

How to Use Keraflot

Working with Keraflot is simple. All you need is Keraflot powder, clean water and a silicone mould.

Recommended mixing ratio

  • 1 part water
  • 3 parts Keraflot powder

First, pour the water into a clean mixing container. Then gradually add the Keraflot powder while stirring thoroughly until you achieve a smooth, lump-free mixture.

Since the mixture begins to set after approximately 10 minutes, it is recommended to prepare only the amount you can use immediately.

Pour the mixture into a clean silicone mould. If necessary, gently tap the mould against a flat surface to release trapped air bubbles.

The cast can usually be removed from the mould after 30–40 minutes. However, before painting, varnishing or applying any surface treatment, allow the piece to dry completely overnight.

Important: According to the manufacturer, no release agent is normally required when using silicone moulds.

How Long Is the Mixture Workable?

Once mixed, Keraflot remains workable for approximately 10 minutes.

The exact working time may vary depending on:

  • water temperature;
  • ambient temperature;
  • the amount of material mixed.

For best results, avoid mixing large batches at once.

Do I Need a Release Agent?

In most cases, no.

According to the manufacturer, additional release agents are generally not necessary when casting in silicone moulds.

The most important thing is that the mould is:

  • clean;
  • dry;
  • undamaged.

Does Keraflot Need Sanding?

One of Keraflot's main advantages is its naturally smooth surface finish.

When using a high-quality silicone mould and the recommended mixing ratio, additional sanding is usually unnecessary.

If you need to remove a casting seam or minor imperfections, this can be done using fine-grit sandpaper only after the piece has fully dried.

Decorating Keraflot

Keraflot offers plenty of creative possibilities and can be decorated in many different ways.

Colour can be added by pigmenting the mixture before casting or by painting the fully cured piece afterwards.

The manufacturer recommends acrylic paints, which are suitable both for mixing into the material and for painting the finished cast.

Decorative effects such as a marble finish can also be achieved by gently blending a small amount of pigment into the white mixture without fully mixing it, creating natural-looking veins.

Should Keraflot Be Sealed?

That depends on how the finished object will be used.

If the piece is intended purely for decorative use in a dry indoor environment, additional sealing is usually not necessary.

However, if it may come into contact with water, moisture, wax or other liquids, it is recommended to protect the surface with a suitable sealer or protective coating.

This helps reduce moisture absorption, makes cleaning easier and extends the lifespan of the finished object.

Is Keraflot Waterproof?

Keraflot is not a waterproof material.

As a mineral casting compound, it remains naturally porous and can absorb moisture.

For this reason, objects that may come into contact with water or other liquids should be protected with an appropriate sealer.

For decorative indoor items, additional protection is generally unnecessary.

Is Keraflot Heat Resistant?

Keraflot is a mineral casting compound with a melting point above 1,400°C, making the material itself non-flammable and highly heat resistant.

Because of these properties, Keraflot is widely used for decorative candle holders and other interior décor items. It can also be used for candle vessels, although the finished piece should first be sealed with a suitable protective coating to reduce the absorption of wax, fragrance oils and other substances into its porous surface.

It is important to note that the manufacturer does not recommend Keraflot for fire bowls or products where an open flame is in prolonged direct contact with the material. Although the material itself does not burn, continuous exposure to direct flame may damage or crack the surface over time.

Can Keraflot Be Used Outdoors?

Keraflot has been developed primarily for decorative indoor applications.

Outdoor use is not officially certified or guaranteed by the manufacturer.

If the finished object is protected from rain and moisture and sealed appropriately, its durability may be improved, although long-term performance will depend on environmental conditions and the protective coating used.

Is Keraflot Food Safe?

Decorative trays and containers made from Keraflot are suitable for holding non-food items.

However, Keraflot is not certified for direct contact with food and should not be used for food-contact applications.
